日本三大名蟹之一，因全身長滿金黃色的細毛而得名，其體形較小，一般約600克重，冬季時可達1公斤。
毛蟹的肉質鮮嫩柔和，雖蟹肉量不及鱈場蟹及松葉蟹多，卻有異常豐富而濃郁的蟹膏。
